My Journey Exploring WordPress as Someone with Zero Coding Knowledge

< Home

It’s tough—I’ll be honest—but the fact that you’re currently reading this blog proves that I’ve managed to overcome this difficulty. Some might think I’m exaggerating, and I do realize it’s probably not as hard as it seems. Yet, in some ways, it really is.

I was naive to think that creating a website would be as simple as making a PowerPoint project. Dragging and dropping elements sounded so easy, and without much thought, I clicked the “Pay” button for a 3-year plan. Why? Because, let’s face it, human nature is greedy, and I couldn’t resist the discount. Now, I still haven’t figured out whether I regret that decision or not, but I suppose time will tell. Anyway, the reason I started this whole thing was for a college module that involves website creation. That’s why there’s still hope that I won’t regret it in the long run. How ironic is it that I’m writing this blog while listening to “Only Time” by Enya?

If I had to describe myself with just one video, it would definitely be that one.

But enough complaining—let’s get to the real reason you’re here. I want to share some solutions and advice for you, my dear readers, especially if you’re a journalist or content creator.

Three things to remember before starting your website.

It’s not a PowerPoint project.

It really isn’t—you can take my word for it. In fact, I’m still discovering the many features WordPress has to offer while sharing my experiences with you all—”not cooked, deep fried”.

If you’re not proficient in coding, be ready—your website might not turn out exactly as you imagined. Compromise is something you’ll need to come to terms with and accept. This doesn’t necessarily mean your website will look bad; it will just look different from the vision you had in your mind.

My condolences to all my fellow perfectionists out there—I’m right there with you. Stay strong!

Be Patient

Creating your own website requires a certain amount of dedication. If you’ve decided that this is what you want, then dive in and stay focused. It can be incredibly frustrating when something doesn’t work as expected, but remind yourself that everyone goes through the same challenges—it’s all part of the process.

If you’re actively looking for solutions, you’ll definitely find them. At the end of the day, if everything were easy, everyone would be successful. So, don’t give up!

Make a plan

One of the biggest mistakes, in my opinion, is creating a website without a clear idea of what you want to write about. In my case, I was in a big rush, but if you have the chance to do some research and explore the process of website creation—do it! It will save you a lot of time and stress. You might even decide it’s not worth it and choose to focus on developing your social media presence instead.

A website might seem cool, but remember, it costs money. If you’re not planning to monetize it, take a moment to seriously consider whether you want to spend money on hosting and a domain annually.

Few reasons to choose WordPress.

Now I understand it might sound like and advertisement, but I genially believe that WordPress is a great tool to build your page.

We’ve all either heard of or visited the websites of these brands (well, maybe not the last one—I just happen to like it). What’s surprising is that many of these sites were built using WordPress, often without us even realizing it. The idea of creating a website without coding is incredibly appealing. Making this process accessible can empower a wide range of people—from journalists to entrepreneurs and business owners.

It’s not just about the information; the designs can look amazing too. While WordPress might not be as user-friendly as I’d like, with the right effort, it’s entirely possible to create something impressive—and it’s absolutely worth it.

For those interested, I’ve included a link to a short tutorial on creating pages and posts. It’s concise, practical, and I highly recommended!
